Amrita Pritam was an Indian novelist, essayist and poet, who wrote in Punjabi and Hindi. A prominent figure in Punjabi literature, she is the recipient of the 1956 Sahitya Akademi Award. Her body of work comprised over 100 books of poetry, fiction, biographies, essays, a collection of Punjabi folk songs and an autobiography that were all translated into several Indian and foreign languages.

The Story

In 1936, at just 16 years old, Amrita Pritam published her first poetry anthology, Amrit Lehran, the same year she married Pritam Singh and changed her name from Amrit Kaur to Amrita Pritam.

๐ŸŒŸ Her 1947 poem Ajj aakhaan Waris Shah nu became an anguished cry over the horrors of Partition, invoking the 18th-century poet to witness Punjab's bloodshed.
3In 1950, she wrote Pinjar, a novel featuring Puro, a character embodying women's suffering amid Partition violence, later adapted into a 2003 award-winning film.
4Her 1956 long poem Sunehade earned her the Sahitya Akademi Award, making her the first woman to win it for Punjabi literature.
