Founded the Maihar gharana and taught many leading Hindustani classical musicians.

Ustad Allauddin Khan, was an Indian sarod player and multi-instrumentalist, composer and one of the most notable music teachers of the 20th century in Indian classical music. He was also the founder of Maihar gharana school of Hindustani classical music. For a generation many of his students, across different instruments like sitar and violin, dominated Hindustani classical music and became one of the most famous exponents of the form ever, including his son Ali Akbar Khan.

The Story

In 1872, a 10-year-old Allauddin Khan ran away from his home in Shibpur, Brahmanbaria, to join a jatra troupe, diving into the rich folk music genres of Bengal such as baul and kirtan.

๐ŸŒŸ By 1877, he became a disciple of Gopal Krishna Bhattacharya in Kolkata, dedicating twelve years to mastering sargam before shifting focus to instrumental music with guidance from Amritalal Dutt and Hazari Ustad.
3In 1907, Allauddin Khan founded the Maihar Band, an orchestra teaching music to orphaned children, which later led to his appointment as court musician to the Maharaja of Maihar, where he innovated the Maihar gharana style.
4๐ŸŽผ In 1935, he toured Europe with Uday Shankar's ballet troupe, exposing Indian classical music to international audiences and later contributing to the Uday Shankar India Culture Centre in Almora.
