Mouttathu Gopalakrishnan Unnithan, known professionally as Adoor Gopalakrishnan, is an Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer who works in Malayalam cinema. With the release of his first feature film Swayamvaram (1972), Gopalakrishnan pioneered the "new wave" in Malayalam cinema during the 1970s. In a career spanning over five decades, Gopalakrishnan has made 12 feature films. His films often depict the society and culture of Kerala.

๐ŸŽฌ In 1972, Adoor Gopalakrishnan shocked Malayalam cinema with his debut feature Swayamvaram, filmed in Kerala, portraying a couple living together without marriage, a taboo subject at the time, sparking controversy and acclaim.

In 1962, he quit a government statistical job to study at the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, supported by a government scholarship, marking a radical career shift from economics and administration to filmmaking.
