Avra Laboratories named one of its buildings after Nobel laureate E.J. Corey, reflecting Rama Rao's deep professional connection and influence from his postdoctoral years at Harvard.

The Story

1
In 1965, A. V. Rama Rao earned his PhD at the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) Pune, under Krishnaswami Venkataraman, where he isolated over 100 new compounds from natural sources, marking a rare achievement in Indian chemistry.
2
๐ŸŒ Between 1975 and 1977, he worked alongside Nobel laureate Elias James Corey at Harvard University, immersing himself in the synthesis of complex natural products and bringing cutting-edge research methods back to India.
3From 1985 to 1995, as director of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), he transformed the institution into a hub for drug technology innovation, emphasizing asymmetric synthesis of biologically active compounds such as Vancomycin.
4๐Ÿš€ In 1995, after superannuation, he founded Avra Laboratories in Hyderabad, pioneering contract research and manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients, which today operates multiple centers and is led alongside his two PhD-holder sons.
