Achutan Ramachandran Nair was an Indian painter. He was born in Attingal, Kerala. In 2002 he was elected a Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi, the national academy of fine arts. In 2005 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honour, for outstanding service to the nation.

🎨 In 1957, A. Ramachandran earned a master's degree in Malayalam literature but chose to pursue art at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, studying under Ramkinkar Baij and Benode Behari Mukherjee until 1961.

Between 1961 and 1964, Ramachandran worked on a doctoral thesis on Kerala mural painting, deeply engaging with traditional Indian art forms that would later reshape his style.
3🌆 Moving to Delhi in 1964, he joined Kumar Gallery and a year later began lecturing at Jamia Millia Islamia, where he helped establish Bachelor’s and Master’s fine arts programs by 1992.
4🖼️ In 1993, Ramachandran co-curated a pivotal exhibition at the National Museum, New Delhi, re-evaluating Raja Ravi Varma’s legacy and reviving interest in his art after decades of criticism.
